Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
