Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Premier Place.

On the surface, this album could seem closer to a challenging university challenge rather than the latest popular music record by an artist who just had a last hit featured a global K-pop star. Divided across four distinct movements and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced album exploring female mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently by way of the prism of different female saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars appear quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and sole credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to blend the past and modern styles, its stakes feel far greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. What really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she's breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly on a stirring Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in with comedic force. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in you rarely exactly understand—or even wish to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each song finishes in a completely distinct point than where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off dark and sinister, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key achievement on Lux involves straddling the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spins upward. This trick is repeated on a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried treasure that takes patience to completely mine but never seem like a chore. While some major pop albums of the year felt like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
